Five years of Matthews Yard. Happy Birthday to us!
Today we celebrate 5 years since we opened to the public in Croydon on 21 April 2012. It’s been a hell of a journey. Loaded with challenges and peppered with unexpected dramas along the way. Our original vision as a hub for technology businesses has evolved into a vision of supporting the spectrum of creative entrepreneurs, primarily through the provision of flexible and affordable space.
In five years we have worked with partners to deliver thousands of events to tens of thousands of people.
We have hosted the great, the good and the not so good. We were lucky enough to be part of a Royal visit by HRH Prince Charles and Camilla one year after the riots. Since then we have continued to adapt and evolve in a difficult climate and continued to attract top talent to Croydon. Our performance space has hosted Mark Thomas, Robin Ince, Richard Herring, and other well-known names in comedy. We have hosted dozens of theatre companies and delivered a diverse range of fringe and amateur theatre productions.
Our flatbreads, our coffee, our brunches, our workspace, our theatre and most recently every single one of our concessions has been celebrated by the local community and championed by the media.
In the last year, we turned a profit for the first time. This has been our biggest source of validation. The dream we were chasing of creating a business which delivered community value on a sustainable basis. Without being reliant on subsidies. We’ve have had a helping hand from the community along the way and we will continue to need it in the future.
As we look to the next five years we give thanks to all those who have supported, encouraged and nurtured us on our journey so far. Too many to name individually, but you know who you are and you should know we have nothing but love for you. Then, now and in the future.
We also look to those who have considered supporting us, but been deterred for one reason or another. As we move forward and expand our offering in and outside Croydon we will need more help. We are not ashamed of trying to do good things without money. We are not ashamed that sometimes things don’t go to plan and we need a helping hand. We are proud of what we do, why we do it and how we do it and we look forward to continuing to for years to come.
Our achievements and our challenges have been well documented. Today we look to our future, in Croydon, and beyond. We have big aspirations. We want to redouble our commitment to the creative community in Croydon and continue to invest in the arts, cultural and creative offering. Over the weekend we will publish a follow-up post, outlining our plans for the future of Matthews Yard.
Have a great weekend and we thank you dearly for your support.
